The change is required by the Federal Highway Administration’s Manaul on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways. RIDOT noted that New England states have been among the last adopters of the mile-marker exit changes in the country.
RIDOT said the project will also include the upgrading and replacement of faded and deteriorated signs along the affected routes.
Much like the first phase, RIDOT will install temporary signs indicating the original exit number of an exit. It will also conduct outreach to local communities and businesses to inform them of the change, as well as inform electronic mapping and GPS companies of the changes.
RIDOT also noted the mile-marker exit changes will eventually come to Interstate 95 and Interstate 195, as well as Routes 10, 24 and 37.
