PROVIDENCE – This month R.I. Public Transit Authority will begin mounting validators, or card readers, on the dashboards of its buses.

“These validators will be able to read smart cards, scan digital codes on phone screens,” said RIPTA in a statement. “This new technology will allow us to offer passengers a variety of fare products that they can just ‘tap and go’ when they leave the bus.”
Current fare boxes will still be in place, however, said RIPTA.
With the new system, modeled after the Massachusetts CharlieCard, passengers can pay for bus fares with online accounts, reusable smart cards or mobile apps, and buy prepaid cards at hundreds of retailers.
