SAN DIEGO – Three Rhode Island School of Design alumni – Sonny Liew ’01, Erica Henderson ’08 and Anne Szabla ’10 – took home coveted Eisner Awards at this year’s Comic-Con International held July 20-23 in San Diego, according to an Aug. 1 release from the Providence arts school.
Liew, a Singapore-based comic book artist and recent author of a graphic novel called “The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye,” was nominated for six Eisner Awards – the most in this year’s competition. He took home Best Writer/Artist, Best Publication Design and Best U.S. Edition of International Material.

Through the life of fictionalized comic book artist Charlie Chen, Liew paints a history of Singapore reaching back to the 1950s.
“I’m trying to make history more inclusive rather than championing a competing version,” he said in a statement.
Winner of the Best Webcomic of 2017 and the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer award, every Thursday Szabla publishes the next installment of “Bird Boy,” which chronicles the story of a small boy looking to prove his worth. She now works in Boston at Harmonix.
This year’s Best Publication for Teens went to Henderson for her artwork in the 2-year-old “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl,” a Marvel series.
Her partnership with Derek Charm on the “Jughead” comic book won Best Humor Publication.
