PROVIDENCE – United Way of Rhode Island this week honored Michael F. Sabitoni, the president of the Cranston-based Rhode Island Building & Construction Trades Council and business manager of Laborers’ Local 271, with its 2008 Dante Mollo Labor Services Award.
The award is given each year someone in the labor community who seeks to improve the community. UWRI cited Sabitoni’s involvement in the construction of its new headquarters in Olneyville and his work with Building Futures, a Providence Plan program for which he serves as an advisory council member.

Building Futures has a goal of placing 30 low-income residents in union apprenticeship programs. (READ MORE) In a statement this week, Sabitoni said the initiative is “vital to urban areas.”
“It provides disadvantaged young adults in urban areas with training and placement for new career opportunities they may not have otherwise had,” he said. “This not only benefits the individual, but the community at large.
“From a union standpoint,” Sabitoni added, “Building Futures is assisting us in replenishing our aging membership so that our contractors can meet the future demands of the marketplace.”
The Rhode Island Building & Construction Trades Council, based in Cranston, is an alliance of 17 unions with a total membership of about 10,000 workers.
The United Way of Rhode Island, a nonprofit that traces its roots back to the 1962 founding of the Providence Community Fund, is dedicated to mobilizing the caring power of the community to improve the lives of people in need.
