Shaw’s layoffs won’t impact R.I. workers

PROVIDENCE – Shaw’s Supermarkets Inc. will lay off 4 percent of its store employees early next month, but workers at the chain’s Rhode Island stores will not be affected, a spokeswoman said.

East Bridgewater, Mass.-based Shaw’s plans to lay off some of its full-time retail workers in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont on April 10, Shaw’s spokeswoman Judy Chong told Providence Business News.

Chong did not say why Rhode Island was insulated from the cutbacks. “For several months, the company has been examining and implementing ways to operate more efficiently, keep costs down, and sharpen our focus on the customer,” she said. “Ultimately, we want to compete more effectively.”

Shaw’s has about 25,000 corporate, retail and warehouse employees. Some of its distribution employees in Massachusetts and New Hampshire are currently on strike.

Last month, Shaw’s said it would sell or close all 18 of its Connecticut locations. That will leave the company with 176 stores in New England, including 12 in Rhode Island.

Shaw’s was owned by J Sainsbury Plc, one of the largest British grocery chains, until it was bought in 2004 by Albertson’s Inc. Supervalu Inc. of Eden Prairie, Minn., acquired Shaw’s in 2006.

Supervalu also operates five Save-A-Lot stores in Rhode Island.
