PROVIDENCE – Of the 1.46 billion handsets that will be sold to end users in 2011, smartphones will account for 27 percent, according to a quarterly smartphone forecast released last week by Pyramid Research.
By 2015, smartphones will nearly double to 53 percent of total handset sales, the organization said, noting the “inexpensive” Android models will drive the boost.

“Much of the projected total market growth in 2011 will come from the Africa and Middle East region, which will see a strong demand for low-end smartphone models, ultra low-cost handsets and dual-SIM and full touch-screen feature phones,” said Stela Bokun, senior analyst and practice leader for mobile devices.
Inexpensive models from Huawei and ZTE will also be in high demand in Western European, Asia and North American markets, Bokun added.
Pyramid said it predicts that by 2015, however, Windows Phone will overtake Android, and other major competitors, to establish itself as the leader in the smartphone OS space.
