South County Hospital offers yoga classes to help women fight osteoporosis

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – South County Hospital is offering a novel approach to help women fight osteoporosis: special yoga classes offered in partnership with All That Matters.
The hospital’s Wellness & Fitness Center is hosting three Yoga for Osteoporosis classes: Sept. 20, Sept. 27 and Oct. 6, all from 9:30 to 11 a.m., in the hospital’s Potter Conference Center.
Billed as an “intervention program,” the yoga classes will focus on building bone density and muscle strength, particularly in the at-risk areas of wrists, ankles, hips and spine. The classes will also help participants improve balance, helping prevent falls and fractures.
In addition, the program will include a discussion of current research, based on recommendations from the National Osteoporosis Foundation, looking at diet and lifestyle and how to prevent and reverse osteoporosis.
The classes will be taught by Elsie Swonger, a registered yoga teacher with the Yoga Alliance at the 500-hour level and a certified cardiac and prenatal yoga teacher.
Pre-registration is required, and the cost is $30 for the series. Registration can be done online, at www.allthatmatters.com”, or in person at All That Matters, 315 Main St., Wakefield, or at the hospital’s Wellness & Fitness Center, 70 Kenyon Ave., lower level, Wakefield.
