South County set to open new orthopedics center

WAKEFIELD – South County Hospital’s new Center for Orthopedics, which has been under construction since mid-September, is almost ready, the hospital says. It is scheduled to open May 1.

The project involved gutting the former medical lab on the second floor of the Borda Wing. It will create a new inpatient unit with 10 oversized private rooms, a wide hallway and a specialized nursing team.

South County Hospital has been carving out a niche in orthopedics, offering specialized options such as Gender Solutions High-Flex Knee, an implant designed to better match women’s bodies, and the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System, an alternative to total hip replacements.

The hospital also recently invested in a surgical technology called VectorVision, a GPS-like computer-assisted system that allows doctors to perform image-guided total knee and hip replacement procedures.
