Effective June 18, H. John Keimig is leaving his position as president and CEO of St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island to become CEO of Quality Partners.

Keimig has been president of St. Joseph since 1991 and previously had served as the hospital’s executive vice president and vice president for planning.

He is credited as the architect of St. Joseph’s transformation from a two-unit hospital to a diversified health-care delivery system that includes the St. Joseph Hospital for Specialty Care, Our Lady of Fatima Hospital, the St. Joseph Living Center, the St. Joseph School of Nursing and the Southern New England Rehabilitation Center. The health system and its divisions are associated with but not financed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence.

Quality Partners of Rhode Island – the health-care quality improvement organization for Rhode Island, as designated by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services – is recognized as a national leader in a number of areas, including nursing homes and home health agencies.

“The Diocese of Providence and the State of Rhode Island have benefited significantly as a result of John Keimig’s steady guidance of this organization and his unending commitment to its missions,” Bishop Thomas Tobin said, as quoted in a statement on behalf of the St. Joseph board of trustees. “He has positioned the hospital for continued service to our patients and the community with excellence and distinction for many years to come.”

Bishop Tobin added that a committee of trustees would begin a search for a new CEO.

Daniel H. Halpren-Ruder, president of Quality Partners’ board of directors, said in a statement, “We are delighted to have been able to attract a person of John Keimig’s experience, skills and stature … His approach to partnering for quality and his visioning and strategic planning skills are in perfect alignment with our organization’s commitment to expanding its position as a leader in health-care quality.”
