EAST PROVIDENCE – Michigan native Matthew S. Schulte has been selected to serve as the Steamship Historical Society of America’s first executive director.
His hiring is the latest in a series of changes for the 72-year-old nonprofit, which recently moved to Rhode Island.
“Over the past several months … we’ve moved our fine arts from New York to Providence, we’ve moved our office staff and established our national headquarters in East Providence, we’ve relocated our 200,000-plus photo collection here from Baltimore and are now moving our large research library and archives,” Robert Cleasby, the SSHSA’s president, said in a statement late yesterday. “We are pleased that Matthew Schulte has joined us as we continue to redefine our role and navigate … uncharted waters.”
Schulte, most recently executive director of the Park-McCullough House Association in North Bennington, Vt., has been active in regional business and historic preservation in both Vermont and Michigan, the society said.
“This opportunity is a perfect match for me, connecting my real-life work experiences with my passion for history and my love of the water,” Schulte said.
