Hannaford has more than 180 stores around New England, while Stop & Shop has 275 stores in New England, New York and New Jersey.
Bloomberg News said that the merger, long discussed, is more likely now after Delhaize brought in new management and overhauled its board to loosen the Belgian company’s ties to its founding family.
The retailers haven’t started discussing price or structure, according to the reports.
