It’s often said that change is the only constant. However, it’s hardly ever easy. To embrace change and increase impact, leaders must know:
•
Discomfort is inevitable. Change agents must hold themselves with confidence – and hold themselves accountable – to inspire others to embrace uncertainty and the necessity of calculated risks. Don’t be shy to celebrate when risks are overcome.
•
Strategy brings action. Leaders are often go-getters who like to dive right into getting things done. However, it is important to take a step back to define your strategy first, including goals, tactics and metrics. This is how visions are brought down to the level of action – and achievements are brought to life. It also enables you to clearly communicate your direction to others. Use it to build culture, garner buy-in and foster your team.
•
Welcome feedback. The strongest leaders know there are many great ideas and they often come from others. Be open to acknowledging previous missteps, exploring new ideas and embracing the continuous evolution of change. Engage others through collaborative input and utilize it to identify opportunities for continued improvement.
•
Be patient and take steps. In a world that is moving faster than ever, waiting to see the impact of change can be the hardest part. Metrics should account for shorter-term and longer-term goals, if possible. This can help you demonstrate incremental success and identify potential challenges to pivot.
Change is a factor for all of us. Embracing it will help you chart the right path and make the greatest impact.
