PROVIDENCE – Moving into the tail-end of wedding season, a new survey shows people are spending on average $1,386 to attend the big day.
LendEdu, an online student loan marketplace, released a new study looking at wedding spending for attendees. The greatest cost, according to the survey, was travel, costing attendees on average $529 per wedding.

“Being a guest at a wedding is not a free ride by any means,” according to the survey. “Weddings are not only expensive for the bride, groom and their families, they are a costly good time for the guests in attendance as well.”
The survey polled 1,000 people aged 18 years and up between Sept. 26-29.
The second-costliest part of attending weddings was gifts, with respondents spending on average $329. Cash and check gifts are becoming ever more popular.
According to the survey, 33 percent of respondents still give a gift from registries, but a close second is cash and checks, representing 32 percent of respondents.
LendEdu offered some advice.
“Do not spend above your means on a wedding gift,” according to the survey. “It is really the thought that counts.”
