What led you to choose health care as your profession? I originally pursued studies in biology and chemistry with the intention of attending medical school. However, along the way I realized that I was more drawn to the personal connections and direct interactions with people, which led me to change my path and pursue a career in nursing instead. How have you helped boost the quality of or access to health care? While we strive to deliver high-quality care in every aspect of nursing, I am particularly proud to have led my team in maintaining low health-care-associated infection rates. What is the biggest challenge you and your organization are facing this year? Like many health care organizations across the nation, we strive to provide excellent patient care while also balancing the need for financial stability. What more do you feel the state can do to help further support the health care sector in Rhode Island? One of the most underserved populations is individuals with mental health needs. It would be beneficial if the state invested more resources and support to better care for these patients. Are you confident patient access and quality of care will improve in Rhode Island over the next five years? Why or why not? Rhode Island has a strong health care system and dedicated clinicians who consistently deliver high-quality care, even while navigating financial and workforce challenges. Improving Medicaid reimbursement, strengthening behavioral health services and enhancing care coordination will improve both access and quality of care. While there is still work to do, the collaboration we’re seeing among health care organizations, policymakers and frontline clinicians gives me confidence that we’re moving in the right direction. If we continue to invest in these areas and support the health care workforce, I believe we can make meaningful progress for patients across Rhode Island. Tell us one thing that most people don’t know about you. Most people don’t realize that I really enjoy watching sports and attending sporting events.
