WASHINGTON – Jack J. Pelton, chairman, president and CEO of Textron Inc.’s Cessna Aircraft Co., has been named to a federal panel that will study issues facing the aviation industry, the U.S. Transportation Department announced Wednesday.
Pelton, a member of Textron’s executive leadership team, was among a group of airline, airport and aviation executives, union officials and academics named to the Future of Aviation Advisory Committee by the Obama administration.

They have been asked to come up with recommendations for Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on possible changes to the country’s aviation policies.
Other members of the committee, which was established in March, include Glenn F. Tilton, chairman and president of United Airlines parent UAL Corp., and David Barger, president of JetBlue Airways Corp.
The panel will be chaired by Susan Kurland, the department’s assistant secretary for aviation and international affairs, and will hold its first meeting on May 25 in Washington.
“Aviation is essential to our nation’s economy and our ability to compete in international commerce,” LaHood said in a news release. “This committee, which represents a broad cross-section of the aviation community, will begin the important conversation about how to ensure the industry remains vital and competitive.”
The committee will focus on five areas: ensuring aviation safety; ensuring a world-class aviation work force; balancing the industry’s competitiveness and viability; securing stable funding for aviation systems; and addressing environmental challenges and solutions, the department said.
