UMass researcher gets grant for fish counting

NEW BEDFORD – University of Massachusetts Dartmouth officials last week announced a $450,000 state grant for fisheries research.
The grant marks the second consecutive year for the research, which is being led by Kevin Stokesbury. The UMass researcher is working to count fish populations more accurately than ever using video cameras attached to specially designed fishing nets.
At an event marking the grant, UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Divina Grossman applauded the school’s researchers for keeping on the “cutting edge of using research to solve real-world problems,” the New Bedford Standard-Times website reported, in this case overcoming the difficulties in making accurate fish stock assessments for use by regulators.
At the event, Stokesbury said that his objective is to raise scientific accuracy to eliminate uncertainty and allow higher catch quotas, the website said. •
