WESTERLY – Construction of the United Theatre project has begun.
The comprehensive arts and education facility will include a black-box performing arts theater, a first-run, two-screen art house and revival cinema, and an arts education center.
Space also will be provided for a micro-cinema, the Rhode Island Philharmonic & Music School and for a Westerly bureau of The Public’s Radio, Rhode Island’s NPR station.
The location is 5 Canal St.
According to organizers, $10 million has been raised toward the project, which has a $12 million fundraising goal. A state bond approved by voters in 2016 has provided more than $2 million.
Construction will continue over the next year. The opening is anticipated in the fall of 2020.
