URI landscape architecture program hosts all-female speaker series

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – For the first time in its 26-year history, the University of Rhode Island landscape architecture program is hosting an all-female speaker series.

Kicked off on Sept. 20 with a lecture by Lisa Delplace, CEO of landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden and Associates in Washington, D.C., her talk was entitled “Pushing the Palette Forward: Innovation in a Dynamic World.”

In total, nine women will speak in the series focused on climate change and sustainable design. Each of these nine women hold leadership roles in the industry.

The remainder of the schedule:

  • Nov. 29 – Emily McCoy, principal at Philadelphia-based Andropogon, will give a talk entitled “Integrative Research and Design in Practice – Verifying Landscape Performance in an Era of Assumptions”
  • Feb. 28 – Kaila Bachman, URI alumna and principal at CBA of Boston, along with Kristin Kaczmarek, URI alumna, will present “Stories from the Sandbox: Communication, Collaboration and Management in Work and Play”
  • March 21 – Gina Ford, co-founder of Agency Landscape and Planning of Boston, will give a talk entitled “At the Water’s Edge: Case Studies in Riverfront and Coastal Restoration”
  • April 11 – Pippa Brashear, director of planning and resilience at Scape in New York City, will speak on “Resilient Landscapes: Rethinking Urban Open Space in an Era of Rapid Climate Change”
  • April 25 – Anne Spirin, a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., will speak on a yet-to-be-determined topic

The lecture series was organized by URI professor of landscape architecture William Green.

Each of the talks will begin at 7 p.m. in room 105 of the Richard E. Beaupre Center for Chemical and Forensic Sciences on URI’s South Kingstown campus.

The talks are free and open to the public.
