Each of the 11 schools named in the Northeast ranking represented one of the 11 states in the region, which includes the six New England states as well as Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. The schools were recognized as the highest-ranked public schools in their respective states according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2014 ranking of top public schools nationwide.
The universities are ranked on the Best Value Schools list according to average 30-year net return on investment for in-state students, calculated using annual Payscale.com survey data. URI, at No. 7, offers an average 30-year in-state net ROI of $714,000. The out-of-state ROI – also mentioned in the Best Value Schools report but not calculated into the rankings – is $642,600.
“The largest university in the state of Rhode Island, URI has a student-centered focus that intentionally creates a friendly, safe and intimate atmosphere,” the Best Value Schools profile of URI stated. “One of the benefits of attending URI is that students are within easy driving distance of both New York City and Boston, providing access to those centers of culture and business, without the high costs and difficulties often associated with living in major cities.”
Stony Brook University-Suny in Stony Brook, N.Y., topped the Best Value Schools list, with a 30-year net ROI of $1.02 million for in-state students and $989,100 for out-of-state students. The University of Maryland-College Park, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., the University of Delaware and the University of Connecticut rounded out the top five.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst represented the Bay State, with in-state ROI of $701,500 and out-of-state ROI of $651,200.
