WASHINGTON – The nation’s job openings, hires and total separations rates all were unchanged in January, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
The total of 4.4 million job openings reported for the last business day of January yielded a job openings rate of 3.1 percent, the same as a month earlier and the highest since February 2001. The rate increased in the West and decreased in the Northeast over the course of the month.

The seasonally adjusted job openings rate was highest in January for professional and business services, and accommodations and food services (4.1 percent each); and education and health services (3.9 percent). The openings rate rose for construction jobs but fell for retail, leisure and hospitality, and accommodations and food services.
The annual hires rate rose slightly over the past year while the turnover or separations rate held steady. The job openings rate – after changing little in the first half of 2006 – rose in the year’s second half.
Year over year, the January job openings rate rose in nearly half of all sectors. It fell in finance and insurance and in real estate, rental and leasing.
