Veteran administrator tapped for city position

Mayor David N. Cicilline has named Richard Kerbel to serve as the city’s director of administration.
“Rich Kerbel is among the most experienced and highly respected administrators in the state of Rhode Island,” Cicilline said last week. “He is perfectly suited to hit the ground running.”
Kerbel brings 34 years of experience in local government management in Rhode Island and New York – most recently, as Coventry’s town manager. He served as North Kingstown’s town manager from 1993 to 2006, winning seven budget awards from the Government Finance Officers Association and helping the town win two upgrades of its municipal bond rating. He was honored by the Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council in 2002 with its Goodrich Distinguished Public Service Award for Local Government.
He previously had served Fallsburg, N.Y., as town manager; and Rochester, N.Y., as the director of neighborhood development and assistant city manager.
Kerbel holds a doctorate in engineering from Texas A&M University, a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado and a bachelor of science degree from Tufts University.
“The statewide budget environment is posing serious challenges to every Rhode Island city and town, but I look forward to working with the mayor to protect the great momentum that has been built in Providence,” Kerbel said. •
