Washington Trust honored by IRS

WESTERLY – The Washington Trust Co. was recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, during a recent event at Casey Family Services in Providence, for its participation in the 2008 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.
The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- and moderate-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country.
The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program provides free tax help to people age 60 and older. Trained volunteers from nonprofit organizations provide free tax counseling and basic tax-return preparation.
Washington Trust was recognized for making available to these tax-return filers a no-fee, no-minimum-balance savings account, and for making their deposits accessible at no cost at Washington Trust ATM’s located in Rite-Aid pharmacies and state office buildings.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from the Internal Revenue Service,” said John C. Warren, Washington Trust’s chairman and CEO. “The VITA and TCE programs provide an essential service in our community and we are pleased to be associated with them.”
