“At the heart of WaterFire is the deliberate juxtaposition of the two ancient elements that most symbolize life: water and fire,” said Barnaby Evans, creator of Waterfire, in a news release on Wednesday. “Venice, the City of Water, is the archetypal city for the realization of this magical balance … [it] is a city of astounding beauty and mystery at every turn, and it is a wonderful honor to be able to bring WaterFire to such an extraordinary site as the Rio dell’Arsenale.”
Evans originally designed WaterFire in 1992 as part of an unrealized project for Berlin. It was later installed in Providence in 1994 where more than 10 million people have seen the exhibition. Different versions of the work have been created for Houston, Kansas City, Mo., Tacoma, Wash., and Columbus, Ohio.
Evans received a Distinguished Service to the Arts award from the National Governors Association in 2010 and was previously recognized by the Bruner Foundation with the 2003 Rudy S. Bruner Silver Award for Urban Excellence.
