W&I hosts health literacy summit Oct. 1

PROVIDENCE – Women & Infants Hospital is hosting a summit on “Innovations to Improve Health and Science Literacy” on Oct. 1 from 8 to 11 a.m. in its South Pavilion Education Center, with a large share of the program focused on how to reach Latinos.
Researchers Drs. Maureen Phipps and Pablo Rodriguez, both of Women & Infants, will present the results of ESCUCHE – Evaluating the Spanish Radio Community’s Understanding of Clinical Research and Health Topics, a project that tested the impact of a program on Latino Public Radio hosted by Rodriguez that sought to educate local Latinos about health issues.
In addition, the summit will feature two keynote speakers: Brenda Dann-Messier, former president of Dorcas Place and now assistant secretary for vocational and adult education in the U.S. Department of Education, and Angelo Falcón, president and founder of the National Institute for Latino Policy.
Dann-Messier will address adult literacy and its relationship to health. Falcón will speak about national policy implications of addressing health and science literacy.
Falcón is also on the board of directors of the National Latino Council on Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention and has written about Latino health issues.
