PROVIDENCE – Women & Infants Hospital held its 128th annual meeting on Dec. 13 at the hospital, presided over by George Shuster, the chairman of the Care New England Board of Trustees.
Shuster praised the recognition Women & Infants received during 2011 – as well as the positive fiscal news achieved: $12.9 million in net revenue, with $429 million in total revenue.
“Women & Infants achieved its financial target for the year due to the diligence of its staff. This is remarkable in view of the difficulty of the economic environment,” Shuster said.
In 2011, Women & Infants earned a number of awards, including a ranking in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospital in Gynecology, Best Children’s Hospital in Neonatology, top performer in cancer, and No. 1 hospital in the Providence metro area.
In addition, Women & Infants and its sister hospital, Kent, earned a HealthGrade 5-Star Maternity Rating, two of only six hospitals in New England to achieve this designation. Shuster credited “the top-notch staff” working at Women & Infants.
Constance A. Howes, president and CEO of Women & Infants, thanked the physicians, volunteers, donors and staff for their dedication. She presented Doug Jacobs of Providence with a Certificate of Appreciation. Jacobs has served as a Trustee and Corporation Director since 2004, board chairman since 2009, and is now a member of the Care New England Board of Directors where he also serves as chair of the Finance Committee.
Dr. Santina L. Siena, president of the Medical Staff Association, presented the Women & Infants Medical Staff Award to Dr. Maureen G. Phipps, interim chief of obstetrics and gynecology and director of research for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
In addition, it was announced that a new cornerstone is being installed on the hospital’s South Pavilion; the first name to be imprinted on it will be Anne Szostak to acknowledge her tireless work to help build the South Pavilion.
Also, it was announced that long-standing Trustee Margaret D. Farrell of Barrington would be recognized by imprinting her name on the hospital’s cornerstone.
A total of 8,362 newborns were delivered in 2011, according to the Women & Infants 2011 annual report. In addition, there were 23,946 newborn patient days in the Neonatal Intensive Care and 20,720 patient days in the hospital’s nurseries. There were also 2,497 inpatient surgical procedures and 5,051 outpatient surgical procedures.
