The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC)’s Clean Day on the Greenway will be a two-day clean-up event this year.
Since Fred Lippitt’s vision for the Woonasquatucket River Greenway in 1993, four parks along the greenway have been renovated and reopened, and a 5.7 mile bicycle/pedestrian path linking recreational areas and green spaces in Johnston and Providence has been created. The bike path is the first and only paved off-road path in both Johnston and Providence.

On Thursday, April 18th, the focus will be on the Promenade/Kinsley Avenue stretch of the Woonasquatucket River. This will be an in-water clean up, as well as on and around the river banks. We will also contribute small beautification projects. Many companies and organizations are forming teams to come out for a day of service! In fact, many of the major sponsors have already registered teams. The WRWC has commissioned a local artist to work with students from the Paul Cuffee School to make educational signs to be displayed on the Greenway.
Then on Saturday, April 20th, hundreds of Johnston residents, businesses, organizations and groups will be helping to clean the Johnston portion of the Woonasquatucket River Greenway Bike Path. Projects for this is family-friendly, Earth Day event will include, painting and hanging educational signs, gathering trash and debris from the river, banks and hillsides along the path, mulching plant beds, and more! The WRWC will provide t-shirts, snacks, water, tools, gloves, a satisfying few hours of work, and a good old-fashioned barbeque lunch and raffle prizes.
