Workforce Board grants to train 4,000 workers

PROVIDENCE – The Governor’s Workforce Board Rhode Island plans to help about 4,000 workers receive on-the-job training this spring through $2 million in employee-training grants.
Eligible employers have through Feb. 5 to apply for up to $50,000 in matching grants to fund training that improves worker productivity, operational efficiency and/or workplace innovation, the board said in a news release. Grant funding runs from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.
The board said training proposals are ranked according to completeness, impact and effectiveness. Additional consideration will be given to proposals that support job growth in the following high-wage industries, including: information, finance and insurance, wholesale trade, professional, scientific and business services, construction and manufacturing.
Funding for the Comprehensive Worker Training grants comes from the state’s Job Development Fund. According to the release, only those employers who pay into the fund are eligible to apply for Comprehensive Worker Training Grants.
