Technology is playing an increasingly significant role in determining how organizations interact with customers. One surprising place that’s occurring is at college radio stations, where students are using a new technology from Zipwhip (www.zipwhip.com) – called cloud texting – to send requests for their favorite songs.

Three college stations – 95.5 FM WBRU at Brown University in Providence; Impact 89 WDMB at Michigan State University in East Lansing; and 91.7 FM WHUS at the University of Connecticut in Storrs  –  have equipped their existing landline numbers with Zipwhip’s texting service. Now, instead of sending a text message to a mobile phone number, students are texting messages to the radio stations’ existing landline phone numbers, where DJs and station employees can read them and respond from any connected desktop, tablet or smartphone.

With all three of these stations, listeners can now avoid long “on-hold” times or the need to redial repeatedly to get through to request lines or to comment to on-air hosts. In return, the radio stations are seeing a broad range of benefits from this cloud texting technology – tripling listener engagement, relying on text as a backup to existing communications systems, and making better use of tight budgets.
