$20K donation to support URI business program

As a part of the $100 million “Making a Difference” capital campaign at the University of Rhode Island, the Independent Insurance Agents of Rhode Island recently donated $20,000 to support the school’s College of Business Administration and the University Library.
The agents have given a total of $397,850 to the university since 1986.
Dennis Charland, executive director of the group, said supporting students is critical to the state’s insurance industry, which is home to roughly 10,000 jobs.
“We like to remind people that Rhode Island is the headquarters of MetLife Auto and Home, the Providence Mutual Insurance Co., Narragansett Bay Insurance Co. and others,” Charland said. “It’s important that students are well educated and prepared to work in our industry.”
The donation to the College of Business Administration will boost the Independent Insurance Endowment for student scholarships. The endowment provides four $2,500 scholarships to Rhode Island students on a need basis.
The donation to the library will be used to purchase books and electronic serials/databases. •
