The Second Annual Esophageal Cancer Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, June 15th, at Warwick City Park in Warwick, Rhode Island at 9 AM. The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation is hosting the walk/run, the only event dedicated to esophageal cancer research in the New England region. All proceeds raised are used towards raising awareness and funding research for esophageal cancer.

Esophageal Cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in the United States and has had a 400% increase in the last 20 years. Many do not realize that, among other factors, frequent heartburn can lead to cancer. Since symptoms are often detected late, almost all cases are fatal. Survivors often suffer a lower quality of life after surgery. Other risk factors include obesity, smoking and excessive drinking.
The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2013, there will be 17,990 new cases of esophageal cancer diagnosed and about 15,210 deaths from esophageal cancer.
