February 22, 2012 – [Providence] Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) President and CEO Peter Andruszkiewicz is leading a Shape Up RI 2012 team called “BMI Busters.” New to Rhode Island, Mr. Andruszkiewicz joined BCBSRI in 2011 and this is his first time participating in Shape Up RI, the award-winning statewide wellness campaign that has already helped 70,000 Rhode Islanders lose weight and increase their exercise.
Mr. Andruszkiewicz considers Shape Up RI a valuable opportunity to lead by example and engage his colleagues in a little friendly competition. “I am challenging myself and all Blue Cross employees during the Shape Up RI Competition,” said Mr. Andruszkiewicz. “My team will be competing in all four categories, and members of any Blue Cross employee team that beats my team will be entered into a raffle to win prizes.”

The added pressure on Andruszkiewicz’s team and extra incentive for their competitors perfectly complements the collaborative spirit Shape Up RI encourages.
A major program sponsor, BCBSRI has provided Shape Up RI with generous financial and in-kind support for the past five years. BCBSRI is one of over 230 companies Shape Up RI has enrolled since its inception in 2006.
Before joining BCBSRI, Mr. Andruszkiewicz served as the president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Georgia, that state’s largest nonprofit health plan.
“When I lived in Georgia,” he said, “I had the benefit of warmer weather for outdoor exercise, but that Southern-fried cooking was a temptation.” He added, “We’re lucky in Rhode Island to have a program like Shape Up RI to help us live healthier lives, and Blue Cross is proud to once again be its lead sponsor.”
Founded in 2006 by Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Shape Up RI is a fun, team-based fitness and healthy eating competition designed to help Rhode Islanders lead healthier lifestyles.
The 12-week Shape Up RI team competition began on February 13 and runs through May 4. Teams and individuals can still register at www.shapeupri.org.
The low $20 registration fee is waived for employees of all participating employers. Employers can find more information about joining the Shape Up RI 2012 Challenge by visiting www.shapeupri.org or call (401) 421-0608.
