Blackstone Academy Junior Chosen for Prestigious Leadership Program

Blackstone Academy Charter School is pleased to announce that junior Selena Evora was selected as an ANNPower Vital Voices Fellow for 2013. Only 50 young women from the United States are chosen to receive this fellowship which is sponsored by ANN INC. (Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft brands) and the Vital Voices Global Partnership. The groups work together to “empower young women from across the U.S. with the leadership skills they need to affect global progress, invest in their communities and begin their journey as the next generation of leaders.” (Leadership Forum binder, 2013)

In early April, Selena attended their annual Leadership Forum in Washington, DC which entailed an all-expense-paid three-day trip filled with events, trainings, and mentorship sessions with top women leaders from around the world including CEOs, international politicians, prominent artists, professors, and leaders of global non-profit companies. In addition to a celebratory gala event at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the fellows participated in a roundtable discussion with women Senior Staff in the White House. A highlight of the trip was meeting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Selena concluded her trip by presenting the project from her working group to a distinguished panel. http://annpower.vitalvoices.org/

Selena has started her own program aimed at raising the self-esteem of young girls. Towards this ends, she is running her own mentoring group for girls at the Pawtucket Boys and Girls Club. A participant in the after school Social Innovators club at Blackstone, she plans to graduate with both a diploma and certificate in Non-Profit studies.  Selena is the daughter of Annie and Juan Rodrigues of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

Blackstone Academy Charter School is a RIDE Commended, independent charter public in its’ eleventh year. The Academy serves 165 high school students from Central Falls and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Students enter the school through blind lottery. More than 85% of graduates go onto higher education. The theme of the school is “community involvement and improvement.”
