The Action Speaks forums are a series of panel discussions proposing underappreciated days in history that changed America as stimulants for contemporary public discourse. These forums encourage lively audience participation, bridging the urban art world and academia in the casual atmosphere of the downtown Providence arts organization, AS220. Each panel draws three or four experts, academics, creatives, and other relevant guests into an open-ended discussion with the larger community. After each forum, the discussion is edited into a one-hour show and broadcast on Rhode Island’s public radio station WRNI at 8 pm the following Sunday. Action Speaks is proud to have been the first locally generated show aired on WRNI. RIPBS joins the collaboration by screening relevant films each week prior to the forums; these not only entertain, but also help educate and develop the potential of these conversations.

AS220 and Marc Levitt began the Action Speaks series in 1995, and since its inception, the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities has offered grant support to help fund these compelling programs. Since 2002, AS220 and RICH have worked as full partners in this yearly production. Thanks to an expansion grant from the National Endowment from the Humanities, the 2009 series will be comprised of two seasons, doubling the programs from 4 to 8, split between a Fall and Spring season. Action Speaks has created a new website at actionspeaksradio.org; the site launched in late March 2009 and we are currently in the beginning stages of archiving the audio and visual content of the last fourteen years so that people can fully explore Action Speaks’ rich history.

In addition to more events, more local radio broadcasts, and more supporting films on RIPBS, the series is also looking to reach more markets. The Action Speaks production team has enlisted the help of an experienced publicity firm to market the series to radio stations nationwide. With a short one month lead time, a recording from the 2008 season focusing on the year the US Census first allowed individuals to identify as mixed-race, was marketed for Black History Month with great success; fifty additional stations requested the program for broadcast. Action Speaks’ 2009 fall and spring seasons will be marketed for national broadcast with assistance from the same firm, Creative PR, but with a significantly expanded several month campaign.

Additional information about the 2009 spring season, including topics and panelists, can be found at actionspeaksradio.org.
