    It is true that Providence is the engine that drives Rhode Island’s economy. And the downtown is the capital city’s heartbeat.

    But, once again, I bring to your attention that Providence is the core of the Providence Metro Area…a 1.6 million population area that includes R.I. and southeastern MA…not just R.I.

    The Providence Convention and Visitors Bureau does not only try to draw visitors from R.I. but the entire Providence Metro, and beyond.

    The state is not the appropriate or most helpful frame of reference – Providence and it’s metropolitan area is.
