WESTERLY – The Washington Trust Co. has been named the first-place winner among banks in the finance category of the 2026 Rhode Island Community’s Choice Awards, the bank announced Aug. 25.
The bank received the most votes among participating banks in the annual awards program, which is produced by the USA Today Network and includes public voting for businesses and organizations across the state.

More than 360 businesses and organizations competed across more than 120 categories, according to Washington Trust.
Finalists were selected following a statewide nomination process before advancing to the public voting round.
On Aug. 25, Washington Trust Chairman and CEO Edward O. “Ned” Handy III said the bank was grateful for the recognition and for the customers and others who voted for it.
“The trust our customers have placed in us over the past 226 years is something we never take for granted,” he said.
BankNewport and Centreville Bank were named finalists in the Bank section of the Finance category. In the Credit Union section, Navigant Credit Union was named the winner, and Coastal1 Credit Union and Greenwood Credit Union were finalists. In the Financial Planning Services section, South County Wealth Planning was named the winner, and Ameriprise-Chapel View and Navigant Credit Union were finalists.
Overall, there were 132 winners announced across various categories, including Beauty & Health; Beauty & Health – People; Dining; Entertainment & Leisure; Entertainment & Leisure – People; Finance; Finance – People; Kids & Education; Pets; Services; Services – People; Shopping; Spirits; Sports & Fitness; Top Employers; Vehicles, Dealers & Services; and Vehicles, Dealers & Services – People.
