Belo Corp. completes New Orleans TV deal

DALLAS – Belo Corp. (NYSE: BLC), parent of The Providence Journal Co., this week completed its purchase of MyNetwork TV affiliate WUPL-TV in New Orleans from CBS Corp.

The deal “also settles litigation between Belo and CBS over the purchase that arose after Hurricane Katrina,” the company said in its Monday announcement. Details of that settlement were not provided.

Belo already owned CBS affiliate WWL-TV in New Orleans.

The purchase of WUPL-TV – announced in 2005, when the deal was valued at $14.5 million – gives the company its fifth duopoly. The others are in the Seattle-Tacoma, Spokane, Phoenix and Tucson markets.
