“Based on current progress, we believe Bell will be ready to proceed into full-rate production in the next several months,” The Defense Contract Management Agency said in an e-mailed statement.
The assessment is good news for a program that since 2002 has been cited by independent review teams and the government program office for poor quality and parts shortages at Bell Helicopter’s plant in Amarillo, Texas. The Pentagon will use this review and combat testing data when it decides in September whether to begin full production, the program’s costliest phase.
