The House Committee on Corporations and the Senate Committee on Commerce, Housing and Municipal Government yesterday unanimously passed legislation to reform the state’s affordable housing law.
The bills will now be sent to their respective chambers for a full vote.

The legislation amends the definition of affordable housing so that subsidies from the local governments apply toward meeting a 10 percent goal. Previously only state and federally subsidized properties applied toward the affordable housing minimum. The definition was further amended to count housing that is affordable, such as mobile housing and Section Eight voucher housings, as affordable. It also recognizes tax abatements as a means to help achieve affordability.
