NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Southeastern New England Shipbuilding Corporation has signed another major barge contract for construction of a 171-foot hopper barge. The barge is being built for Disch Construction of Summit, New Jersey, who will use the barge to transport dredge spoils.
Construction of the barge, which will have a holding capacity of 2,750 cubic yards, is expected to begin in late May and be completed sometime in August. The news follows the company’s recent announcement of its single largest barge contract ever. The earlier contract involves the construction of a 330-foot double-hulled liquid fuel barge.
Company officials said its repair business, launched in August, 2001, has experienced a great deal of growth in the past few months. The company recently signed a contract for the repair of twelve 220-foot hopper barges for Modern Continental, a Boston-based construction company. The repair activity, which employs 25 of SENESCO’s 180 employees, is conducted at the former aircraft carrier pier at Quonset Point, either inside the SENESCO dry dock or directly alongside the carrier pier.
