NEWPORT — The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport (NAVSEA Newport) and James R. Moden, Inc., of Bristol have signed a cooperative research and development agreement to evaluate a low cost and wakeless, environmentally friendly monopropellent fuel.
The fuel, — Moden Fuel I, invented by James R. Moden, Inc.– is essentially useable, meaning it is proven to work as a fuel — said Naval Undersea Warfare Center spokesman Gary Steigerwald. The two organizations will test the fuel as a possible replacement for Otto Fuel II, which is currently used by the U.S. Navy for topedo and other propulsion needs. Steigerwald could not say how long a period of time the testing will take place over.

According to NAVSEA Newport, Moden Fuel I produces pure water and carbon dioxide when burned. Use of the new fuel could result in a significant reduction or elimination of the collection and disposal of hazardous waste associated with Otto Fuel, NAVSEA said. In addition, Moden Fuel has the potential for use in all marine vessels, including cruise ships, ferries and pleasure crafts.
