Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse and John Enright, agent in charge of the Providence office of the United States Secret Service, have warned Rhode Islanders to be aware of and not respond to communications purporting to offer opportunities to profit from a transfer of large sums of money from Lagos, Nigeria and other West Africa locations.
The attorney gen-eral’s Consumer Protection Unit and the Secret Service are reporting an average of a dozen complaints a day from Rhode Island individuals and businesses that are receiving the so-called “Nigerian Scam Letter.” The letters received in the mail, by e-mail or by fax, often times address the recipient as “The President/CEO.”

The authors of the letters ask recipients to provide the name, address, telephone or fax number of a bank they do business with and their bank account number. The letters offer the recipient the opportunity to share large sums of money.
