PROVIDENCE – The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island increased 4 cents week to week to $2.88 per gallon Monday, lower than the national average of $2.97 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast.

Regular gas in Rhode Island averaged $1.93 per gallon one year prior.

AAA said that the cyberattack that shut down the Colonial Pipeline, which delivers 45% of all fuel to the East Coast, is expected to continue to impact gas prices on the coast. However, the Northeast was said to be more insulated from the shutdown due to foreign gasoline imports and other pipelines.

“This shutdown will have implications on both gasoline supply and prices, but the impact will vary regionally. Areas including Mississippi, Tennessee and the East Coast from Georgia into Delaware are most likely to experience limited fuel availability and price increases, as early as this week,” said Lloyd Albert, senior vice president of public and government affairs for AAA Northeast, in a statement. “These states may see prices increase 3 to 7 cents this week.”
