Carrie Abatiello has been made an associate in the firm of Moses & Afonso. Abatiello concentrates her practice in the areas of commercial finance and commercial real estate, focusing on real estate projects. Abatiello has a B.A. from Wheaton College, a J.D. from Roger Williams University and an M.A. in business administration from Suffolk University.

PBN: What new responsibilities are you looking forward to in your position at Moses & Afonso?
ABATIELLO: My colleagues here have been at the heart of many of the pivotal land-development projects in the state and they seem to have forged strong client relationships. I am looking forward to becoming an integral member of the commercial finance /commercial real estate team. Specifically, I seek to leverage my background in finance to navigate the complicated world of revenue bonds and continue to expand and grow my practice.

PBN: Having recently graduated with an MBA, could you cite an important lesson or idea that you have learned?
ABATIELLO: There are two lessons that I learned. The first is that law and business really do have a symbiotic relationship. The relationship extends to even the minute details that one might not expect. The second lesson relates to globalization, which is quite a hot-button issue right now. No company or firm, no matter how big or small, can afford to be insular. In today’s economy we must look to the broader world.

PBN: In your estimation, have asset-based lenders in commercial finance been affected by recent trends in real estate?
ABATIELLO: Yes, asset-based lenders in commercial finance have been affected by the recent trends in real estate; no one has managed to escape unscathed. In fact, the full ramifications have yet to even reveal themselves. Deals that used to require little or no collateral are now being denied. Financing is being staunched and development is suffering. That said, our firm continues to see development in Rhode Island.

PBN: How is the development of commercial real estate in the state of Rhode Island unique?
ABATIELLO: First and foremost, Rhode Island fosters a climate of economic development. Rhode Island can offer the same benefits of Boston and New York for a fraction of the cost. Our transportation system and infrastructure … Acela, Interstate 95 and the ocean all combine to make Rhode Island an attractive location for perspective developers. &#8226
