Providence, Rhode Island, USA- December 28, 2009 – Adopt a Doctor, an international non-profit organization based in Rhode Island, has identified a doctor from Mali to receive financial support from its program.

Diakaridia Traoré, M.D. has signed on to continue practicing in Mali for at least more seven years. In return, Adopt a Doctor is doubling his salary as an incentive for his commitment to remain in Bamako, the country’s capital and largest city. Mali, similar to other developing nations, is experiencing a brain drain that is drawing experienced medical doctors away in search of higher salaries in other countries.

Dr. Traoré is a certified primary care physician who also has an epidemiology degree from the University of Bordeaux in France. Motivated by his passion to provide access to care on a large scale, Dr. Traoré is currently pursuing a degree in public health. He serves as the Director of Health Programs for the Mali Health Organizing Project (MHOP), which is committed to improving access to care in periurban communities through a combination of improved clinical care options, as well as increased government and community involvement in improving the health of the area. Prior to MHOP, he worked in rural Mali and introduced a telemedicine (medical consultation via satellite) system in the village of Dimbal, which is located in the Dogon region of the landlocked African nation of Mali.

Referring to his role as physician and involvement with MHOP, Traoré said, “The work, above all, is exhilarating.” In addition, Traoré expressed his appreciation for Adopt a Doctor’s support, stating, “Adopt a Doctor’s support greatly contributes to my ability to continue helping this community.”

“By supporting Dr. Traoré,” said Ray Rickman, President of Adopt a Doctor, “our program will keep one of the best and brightest minds in Mali. As seen from his accomplishments, it is evident that Dr. Traoré’s presence in Mali will continue to have a positive impact on so many lives.”

Adopt a Doctor, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Providence, was established by Ray Rickman in 2003 to supplement the salaries of medical doctors in Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, and Malawi. These countries have fewer medical doctors than almost any other nation in the world.

With the addition of Dr. Traoré, Adopt a Doctor currently supports 18 doctors, two of whom are women. The roster now includes: two doctors from Liberia, three doctors from Sierra Leone, seven doctors from Malawi, and six doctors from Mali. Adopt a Doctor doubles the salaries of physicians on the condition that they remain practicing in their countries for at least seven years.
