WEST KINGSTON – American Power Conversion (Nasdaq: APCC), a global leader in power availability solutions, today unveiled its InfraStruXure InRow SC cooling unit, which provides predictable air conditioning for wiring closets and server rooms.
This 12-inch-wide, half-rack device is a self-contained cooling solution capable of providing up to 7kW of cooling capacity, APC said. That allows IT professionals to place

The unit is intended to reduce energy costs by removing heat at the source, in uses where remote removal would require greater fan horsepower over longer distances of ductwork. APC said the InRow SC’s plug-and-play design also allows for rapid installation with no need to run refrigerant lines, provide remote heat exchangers, or contract mechanical services.
Wiring closets and computer rooms have traditionally used building air conditioning to satisfy the cooling requirement in those environments, APC noted. But higher power densities in networking switches, servers and other IT equipment have increased heat requirements well beyond the capacity of most building air conditioning systems.
“The new InRow SC provides our customers with a dedicated cooling solution that meets the challenging heat removal requirements of wiring closets and server rooms,” said Bud Collins, general manager of APC’s Cooling Solutions group. “These small rooms and wiring closets are heating up due to advances in server-based telephony, such as voice-over-IP and power-over-Ethernet. The InRow SC maximizes agility and availability in server rooms and wiring closets while minimizing total cost of ownership.”
In addition, APC said, the InRow SC is easy to access and control with integrated network manageability via Web, SMNP, and Telnet, offering predictive failure notification. A patent-pending control technique measures and reports unit cooling capacity on the display interface for real-time capacity management. Its modulating capacity control and variable speed fans allow the InRow SC to provide the required amount of cooling to the IT equipment, even in lightly loaded situations. The automatic restart increases availability by returning cooling to IT equipment after a power outage, while the hot-swappable fan modules minimize the mean-time-to-recovery. With a modular and scalable design, the added agility enhances cooling deployments as demand increases and ease of installation minimizes deployment time and costs.
