WARWICK – The Beacon Mutual Insurance Co. today named industry veteran Robert G. DeOrsey to serve as the workers’ compensation insurer’s vice president of underwriting and loss prevention starting Monday, June 11.
DeOrsey has 22 year experience in underwriting and loss prevention, most recently as manager for the past three years of the W.T. Phelan Insurance Agency’s office in Belmont, Mass., where he directed a staff of 13. He previously had served as an underwriting director for the CNA Insurance Group from 2001 to 2004, and as vice president of the Rhode Island brand of CGU Insurance Co., where he managed a staff of 80 from 1997 to 2001. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, with a bachelor’s degree in insurance and finance, he also has held the CPCU designation since 1991.
“Rob has an enormous amount of insurance expertise and I am very pleased to have him as a member of Beacon’s senior management team,” said James V. Rosati, Beacon’s president and CEO. “He has a thorough understanding of underwriting and loss prevention operations and brings extensive senior management experience to the position.”
Beacon Mutual’s former vice president of underwriting, David Clark, was indicted in October on five felony counts of fraud and conspiracy for allegedly attempting to cover up improprieties at the insurance company.
In February, the company retained executive search firm Witt/Kieffer to help fill the position. Witt/Kieffer contacted more than 300 candidates and interviewed 20 of them, Beacon said.
“As a native Rhode Islander, I fully understand Beacon is integral to the stability of Rhode Island’s workers’ compensation system,” DeOrsey said. “I look forward to working with Beacon’s senior management team to provide Rhode Island employers workers’ compensation coverage at competitive rates with unparalleled service.”
He is to oversee the daily operations of Beacon’s underwriting and loss prevention departments, managing a combined staff of 53.
The Beacon Mutual Insurance Co. – established by legislation enacted in 1990, by the R.I. General Assembly, as the State Compensation Insurance Fund – is the largest writer of worker’s compensation insurance and commercial property casualty insurance in Rhode Island.
