FALL RIVER – Blount Fine Foods broke ground Monday on a $13 million expansion of its headquarters that will nearly double the size of the facility.

Blount, which was founded in Rhode Island in 1946 as Blount Seafood Corp., makes soup and prepared foods sold under brands including Legal Sea Foods and Panera Bread. Its revenue topped $70 million in 2008, according to Providence Business News data.

Blount opened its 60,000-square-foot plant in the Fall River Industrial Park in 2004, shifting the bulk of its operations from its longtime home in Warren.

Blount said the additional 58,000 square feet of space will allow more room for production, the installation of a large soup chiller, new soup fillers and expanded packaging processing. The company also plans to build new cold processing rooms as it prepares to start selling dips, spreads and salads.

“Our business continues to grow due to the hard work and dedication our team puts into making the best soups in the world,” F. Nelson “Todd” Blount II, president of Blount Fine Foods, said in a news release. He is the third generation of his family to run the company.

Blount told The Herald News that the expansion could mean as many as 100 new jobs over the next five years. The company already employs about 130 people in Fall River and another 70 in Warren, which is also the home of its Blount Clam Shack.

Blount Fine Foods said it expects the expansion to be completed by December. CMC Associates Inc. of Quincy, Mass., is managing the project.
