Blue Cross announces partnership with Elisha Project

PROVIDENCE – Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island has announced a new partnership with Elisha Project, an East Providence-based organization that provides fresh food for people in need.

Patrons of the Elisha Project are able to receive about 25 pounds of food at monthly drive-up markets, which also supply essentials such as diapers and personal care items and recipe cards in English and Spanish.

The project, which Blue Cross is supporting through a $75,000 grant and volunteering, is fueled by volunteers who pack items for the markets and transport boxes to markets.

Providing access to fresh food is a vital health resource for people whose diets may be restricted to eating inexpensive, unhealthy options, said George Ortiz, co-founder of the Elisha Project.

“We are not a traditional food pantry. Elisha focuses on rescuing fresh foods – especially protein, vegetables and fruits – foods that are in scarce supply for the people who need them most,” Ortiz said. “People who are struggling socioeconomically are often relegated to eating pre-packaged and inexpensive food high in sugar and saturated fats. These limited options can lead to dangerous health conditions like obesity, diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.”

The Elisa Project’s work to funnel fresh, healthy food to people in need matches Blue Cross’ mission of health for all Rhode Island residents, said Carolyn Belisle, Blue Cross managing director of corporate social responsibility.

“Access to healthy food is a critical driver of whole health, and Blue Cross is committed to increasing access to nutrition and other resources Rhode Islanders need to achieve their best health,” Belisle said.

The next market is scheduled for May 21, with a location to be announced. Other market dates are planned for each remaining month of the year.

Volunteers distributed more than 45,000 pounds of food and other items at the March market, Ortiz said, adding that there were no leftovers.
