The Bank of America Charitable Foundation held a weeklong Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., which was attended by more than 230 high school students from across the United States – including five students from Rhode Island. The students were selected as part of Bank of America’s philanthropic program, the Neighborhood Excellence Initiative.
The summit addressed the topics of “service in America” and the “role of Millennials as a civic generation.” Workshops and hands-on activities focused on how service creates change in communities; how corporate, nonprofit and government collaboration is instrumental in community revitalization; and the important role that nonprofit organizations play as community anchors.
In addition to attending the summit, the students will participate in eight-week internships at nonprofits in their local communities, paid for by the bank’s foundation. Anna Maria Hammond, of Cranston High School East, and Elizabeth LaGuerre, of Classical High School, will intern at Fox Points Boys & Girls Club; Christian Martinez, of Providence Academy of International Studies, Asia Turner, of East Providence High School, and Rosa Thao, of Classical High School, will intern at Wanskuck Boys & Girls Clubs. •
