John T. Campanini, Jr., a life-long resident of Providence, has been named project supervisor by the Rhode Island Tree Council’s Forest Sustainability Project, a $449, 000 initiative designed to help assess and improve forest health, provide urban forestry training, and promote, maintain, and increase green employment in Rhode Island. The project is being funded by a grant from the American Resource and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009.
Campanini, who has worked in urban forestry for 35 years, will supervise all technical areas of the Forest Sustainability Project, which calls for the Rhode Island Tree Council to conduct community-based tree surveys, plant trees and other woody ornamentals, perform care on established woody plants, conduct training workshops, and develop management planning documents. He has extensive experience in tree resource planning and management.

Campanini is president of Tree Technologies, a Providence firm. He is also technical director of the Rhode Island Tree Council. Previously, he was chief parks planner for the City of Providence from 1997 to 2003. Before that, he was city forester for Providence from 1976 to 1997.
Campanini is an authority on urban forestry. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, he is a member of the International Society of Arboriculture, the Society of Municipal Arborists, and the RI Nurserymen & Landscapers Association. Campanini received the Garden Club of America, Civic Improvement Award in 2003. He has won several awards for his arboriculture work.
The Rhode Island Tree Council is a non-profit, tax-exempt group dedicated to improving the state’s tree resources. Composed of members, professional consultants, and volunteers, RITree administers its programs through its Board of Directors, Advisors, and Trustees. RITree’s mission is to create healthy urban and community forests, which underpin the state’s verdant ecological tapestry, support its vibrant economy, and enrich resident’s lives.
